Community, Camaraderie, and Tight Lines: WDTU Celebrates 6th Annual Bartle Lakes Outing
Clear skies, warm fellowship, and eager fish set the stage for another memorable chapter event as 25 anglers gathered for the 6th annual Bartle Lakes outing. Now a cherished annual tradition, this year’s trip brought together seasoned veterans, enthusiastic newcomers, and great friends for a stellar day on the water.
The event highlighted the bright future of fly fishing, with six youth anglers (ages 18 and under) showcasing their skills. Among them were returning regulars Ava and Bryn Bloom, who once again proved they are pretty darn good anglers with impressive technique on the lake. The day also featured fantastic participation from female anglers, including Jacqueline Lawrence and Michaela Martinez, reflecting the vibrant and inclusive spirit of the chapter.
Out on the upper lake, retired guide Jay Hayes generously shared his time and deep reservoir of knowledge, assisting ten anglers by boat. Jay’s expert guidance helped participants navigate the water and enjoy top-tier lake fishing throughout the day.
When it was time to step off the water, participants were treated to a feast expertly prepared by head chef David Dudden and his capable sous chef, Troy Hayes (no relation to Jay, though both proved to be top-tier masters of their crafts!). The fantastic lunch provided the perfect backdrop for swapping stories, laughing with friends, and refueling after a busy morning of casting.
Six years running, the Bartle Lakes trip continues to demonstrate what makes WDTU special: passionate volunteers, stellar mentorship, and a shared love for the outdoors. A huge thank you goes out to everyone who attended, guided, cooked, and made this year's gathering such a resounding success. Here's to many more years on the water together!
Tight Lines and Perfect Loops: Recapping Last Month’s Fly Casting Clinic
Last month, WDTU hosted our highly anticipated Fly Casting Clinic, and the energy was incredible! Whether attendees were trying to untangle the mystery of the double haul or simply trying to avoid hooking their own ears, our fantastic instructors had everyone casting with confidence by the end of the evening.
Tailored Coaching: Beginners mastered the essential basic overhead cast, while seasoned anglers tightened up their loops for those breezy Colorado days. Attendees also learned basic mending and line control and when and why to use casts.
Community Spirit: It was wonderful to see a great mix of fresh faces and long-time members sharing tips, laughs, and stories.
A huge thank you and massive shoutout to our incredible instructors, Jonathan Walter and Will Kopal, who dedicated their time, expertise, and endless patience to make this event a success.
