West Denver Trout Unlimited (WDTU) is one of the most active and decorated chapters of Trout Unlimited in the country, dedicated to the conservation, protection, and restoration of Colorado's fisheries. Based in the Arvada/Golden area, the chapter has built a legacy of environmental stewardship, particularly within the Clear Creek watershed.
In 2024 and 2025, WDTU received significant acclaim for its grassroots impact and leadership:
Colorado Water Education Exemplar (2025): The chapter's Trout in the Classroom (TIC) program was recognized by the Colorado Water Center for its excellence in building water literacy and connecting students to local waterways through hands-on learning.
Outstanding Volunteer Awards (2024/2025): Ashley Giles, WDTU President, was recognized for her tireless conservation work in the Clear Creek watershed. She managed the Integrated Stream Management Plan process, building relationships with stakeholders from its headwaters to its confluence with the South Platte. She secured a $10,000 grant to plant trees to improve the riparian habitat along Clear Creek in Wheat Ridge. She also received a $5,000 grant for CC conservation work. She serves as the Chapter’s Conservation Director and manages the River Watch program on the Creek. Bob Clark was recognized for his tireless work supporting the Chapter. Bob is known as "Mr. Everything", and he shows up everywhere. He is a keystone of Chapter strength. Some of the things Bob does: manages our storage unit inventory, sells raffle tickets at Chapter meetings, manages our major fundraiser, the Fantasy Raffle, and brings snacks and drinks to our events. He also helps with events like the tree planting, Colorado Public Lands Day, Windy Peak, Let’s Go Fishing, and Let’s Go Camping
John Semich: Recognized for his work building partnerships with Colorado Parks and Wildlife and Jefferson County to expand community education.
City of Golden Sustainability Award: WDTU was honored in the Community Group category for its collaborative efforts to enhance the health and recreational sustainability of Clear Creek.
Embrace A Stream Grant: The chapter was awarded a prestigious $10,000 grant from National TU to fund major tree-planting initiatives in Wheat Ridge, improving habitat and water temperatures for local trout populations.
These recent honors join an elite history of recognition. WDTU is a past recipient of the Gold Trout Award, the highest honor bestowed by National Trout Unlimited, signifying it as the best chapter in the nation. This tradition of excellence continues through their massive volunteer efforts, ranging from the "Fantasy Raffle" fundraisers to intensive stream cleanups and habitat restoration projects.
WDTU has been consistently recognized by National TU and Colorado TU.
