Conservation Issues

The West Denver Chapter of TU is a non-profit organization serving anglers and environmentally conscious friends in an ongoing effort to fulfill the mission of Trout Unlimited:
...  Conserving, protecting and enhancing Colorado's coldwater fisheries through volunteerism, education and outreach.

We dedicate ourselves to presenting timely and informative news concerning local conservation, restoration and related topics. We also organize various outings, have educational programs, and conservation work. As volunteers, the results from our activities are both fun and satisfying. If you share our passions for conservation, then please consider joining and participating in Trout Unlimited. Also, be sure to sign up for our email list to receive updates on critical issues concerning fisheries conservation.
We hope you will bookmark our  site (http://www.wdtu.org) and visit often.

WDTU is one of the largest and most active Chapters in the state of Colorado. We created this                                web site to facilitate better communications among our membership and with the community at large. Here you
will find information about our Chapter and the Trout Unlimited organization, details on our current and past activities and projects, important conservation and legislative information, and some fly fishing news. Please feel free to browse our site and come back as often as you like. We are always striving to improve, so we welcome your feedback. From all of us at WDTU, enjoy!

West Denver Trout Unlimited devoted August and September of 2011 to the heavy construction portion of the Canyon Reach Project, our second Clear Creek fisheries restoration effort. The Canyon Reach Project especially seeks to improve portions of Clear Creek that provide safe and relatively easy access to good fishing habitat for young families and less than optimally mobile  , and is being constructed in three separate sections. The most downstream section of this project is located at Mayhem Gulch, about 9.5 miles upstream of the intersection of Highways U.S. 6 and CO 93, or just downstream of Mile Marker 262 on Hwy 6.    The middle section is located at a large unpaved parking area located roughly 0.7 miles above Mayhem Gulch, and the upper-most section is near Mile Marker 261, where a paved parking area and a Jefferson County Canyon Park Open Space sign has recently been installed.  The top of the project is a short distance below the confluence of Clear Creek’s north fork and the main stem.
The contractor for the Canyon Reach Project is again Frontier Environmental Services, a company that WDTU has found to be very responsive and professional.... continued

West Denver TU Wins             Silver Trout Award
West Denver TU Wins Silver Trout Award – The West Denver Chapter was awarded one of the highest chapter awards in TU.  They are very deserving of this honor for their broad based, steady, and consistent approach to all aspects of being a TU chapter.  They run a strong youth program, are consistently reaching out to new members, have done phase after phase of restoration work on their home streams, and are engaged in various aspects surrounding impacts from the I-70 corridor.  Congratulations!

Cheesman Canyon - Dec 14th.

It was mostly sunny this day and the afternoon high temps must have been in the 40s with a some gusty wind periodically. It was pleasant on the river but for me the fish had lock jaw again. I had pre-tied a half dozen duo-combinations of nymphs / midge to try. Mostly something that has worked before tied to something I had not tried before. As I walked the bank I scared up a couple of fish that were hugging the bank in about 4 inches of water. Nymphed places I have caught fish before in the deeper runs with some current. (I have never been very successful in the very slow deep runs.) In spite of the clear water I could not see many fish. With the few I did, by the time I got close enough to make a cast they had moved off somewhere else. Most of my pretied combinations I lost in the rocks and twigs in deep water at some point. I did hook a tree once when I was extremely aggressive on setting the hook on a fish I saw moving to my fly.   continued
