Benzethonium Chloride
A Quaternary Ammonium Compound (QAC)
updated 10/13/2006

Benzethonium Chloride (CAS 121-54-0)

From the CA DFG testing report: Superficial cracks on rubber toes and heals of wading boots may occur. Water may not bead up on the outside of the waders. Integrity of boot is not compromised.

Mixture ratio: 1940 mg/Liter of water or 7.34 grams/gallon - 97% pure Benzethonium Chloride ( from Ca DFG report)

For 98.8% Pure Benzethonium Chloride dissolve 7.43 grams per 1 gallon of water.
For 90% Pure Benzethonium Chloride dissolve 8.16 grams per 1 gallon of water.
For 50% Pure Benzethonium Chloride dissolve 14.85 grams per 1 gallon of water.

Assuming that you are using a 5 gallon bucket with 4 gallons of solution you would need 30 grams of 98.8% pure Benzethonium Chloride. This will be a white powder.

This compound has been hard to locate. It may be easier for you to get hold of Copper Sulfate or Formula 409 Disinfectant or Sparquat 256. Go back to the How to clean you waders page to find out more about those chemicals

Whirling Disease:

On the Whirling Disease Foundation's website, article "Prevention Methods for Anglers", it says that quaternary ammonium compounds (QAC) are effective for killing both phases of Whirling Disease. It list Bright Water™ as one of the products. A google search does not turn up any sources for this product. (Scott rods appears to be the owner of the trade name Bright Water. Emails to Scott Rods has gone un answered. I believe this was an unsuccessful product for Scott when WD first came about) The WDF article also says that Roccal -D and Parvosol also contain quaternary ammonium compounds and are manufacturered for the pet/veternary trade. A google search shows several online businesses that sell these two products. A check of Petsmart on line shows that they carry a quaternary ammonium disinfectant, Ken-Care kennel disinfectant.

These products were not tested in the California Department of Fish and Games NZMS Wader testing program.
