Charlie Horn---Jeffco Open Space Volunteer of the Year

For those who don’t know, in 1972 Jefferson County initiated a unique program by which sales tax funds are used to acquire, maintain, and preserve open space for the use and benefit of the public (Jeffco Open Space). One aspect of this program is to foster awareness and appreciation for the County’s natural and cultural resources through educational and interpretive venues. These educational and interpretive functions are provided not only by a cadre of full-time staff but also by a large number of trained and actively engaged volunteers. Charlie, a long-time member of WDTU, has been involved with a number of Chapter activities. He is the former Director of WDTU’s Education Program, was previously involved in the Fantasy Raffle, and just finished a stint as Director of the Fly Tying Clinic event held last February. In addition to his WDTU activities, Charlie has also been heavily involved with the Jeffco Open Space program. He has served as a Program Naturalist at Jeffco’s Lookout Mountain Nature Center and as a leader in the development of a beginning fly fishing class for the general public (see related article in this issue). For all his work (and, according to the citation, for his friendly attitude and “perpetual smile”) this past year, Charlie was given the Jeffco Open Space Volunteer of the Year Award. Congrats, Charlie.

Legislation News

“Rapid Response” WDTU Members

The ability of West Denver Trout Unlimited members to rapidly respond to critical issues concerning fisheries conservation depends upon rapid communication. Hard copy and electronic newsletters can provide critical information, but cannot provide members with immediate information concerning legislative action, meeting dates, or other time-sensitive data vital to an informed and timely response.
The WDTU board has approved the establishment of a “rapid response” email list of WDTU members, designated for the express purpose of providing information to those members who may wish to proactively respond to important issues that affect our fisheries. Members who wish to be listed will then be notified by email when an important event is eminent, or when calls and letters to their representatives are needed.
We will not use anyone’s email address without your express permission, but if you would like to help
fisheries conservation by being a member of WDTU’s
‘rapid response” email list, please send your message to
Dan Sullivan at the following email address:
<WDTU@msn.com>.

Find your State and US Senators/Representative + their contact information:
www.vote-smart.org

From that site, you can find out who your legislators are. You will need to enter your zip plus four to call up your district information; if you do not know that number, the website includes a link to the US Post Office website where you can look up your plus four using your address. Both features appear in the upper left hand portion of the vote-smart web page.

These sources will list all of the US senators and Congressmen for a given state:

In order to re-balance the fishery at Blue Mesa Reservoir, the Colorado Division of Wildlife is developing plans to remove small- to medium-sized lake trout from the reservoir starting in late fall 2009.

Blue Mesa Reservoir, located west of Gunnison, is a very productive fishery and the primary water for kokanee salmon production in the state. Lake trout, which are very efficient predators, are consuming kokanee and causing a significant drop in the population of the fresh water salmon. Rainbow trout survival is also declining due to lake trout predation. At the same time, the size of lake trout is declining because competition for food among the fish is increasing. JUNE 27, KREMMLING AREA WOMENS CAST AND BLAST II

A women-only intermediate fly fishing and shotgun seminar in the Kremmling area on June 27 has been opened to women statewide. This clinic is wonderful for someone who has already completed Cast & Blast I or who already considers themselves a beginner in shooting and fly fishing but wants to improve to the intermediate level. The casting portion of the clinic will focus on improving the casting skills and learning to fish the river. Waders are recommended but not required. All flies, fly rods and reels will be provided for the day but personal gear is welcome. The second portion of the clinic will focus on improving shotgun shooting skills by learning the different shooting sports and practicing trap shooting. It will be a safe afternoon designed for improving your shotgun skills; Shotguns will be provided but shooters are welcome to bring their own.
The clinic begins at 8:30am and will conclude mid-afternoon.
There is a $15 charge for the clinic that will cover lunch.

"DENVER, Colo. The Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW) is proud to take part in National Get Outdoors Day, Saturday, June 13 at City Park in Denver. Come join us at the free event and learn about wildlife in Colorado!

DOW Director Tom Remington will address the crowd at 11:00 AM and give away a gift basket filled with wildlife recreation-oriented equipment to one lucky registrant.

Employees and volunteers from the DOW will be on hand to Take a Family Fishing. Come early to register for a chance to learn how to fish at the lake with trained anglers. Participants will learn about aquatic environments and how fish respond to different habitats, as well as have an opportunity to fish themselves. Attendees will depart with some tools to pursue fishing in Colorado on their own.

Among the many outdoor activities during the Junior Ranger program, kids will learn how to identify animal sign and what kinds of bugs, birds, and invertebrates can be found close to home. All participants will receive information and educational material to continue their Colorado wildlife journey on their own.

Finally, families can get up close and personal with urban wildlife and other Colorado critters at the DOW booth. Pelts, skulls and animal sign will be on display and explained to all so that families can recognize the animals near their home and learn how to share the landscape."
