Bob and Hozer's New Zealand Mud Snail Recipe:
Hozer and I were on a discussion after our last Trout Unlimited meeting
where we were introduced to new information concerning the latest threat
to our Fisheries: The spread of The New Zealand Mud Snail. Come to find
out that some of the previous soaking solutions that were helping to eliminate
the spread of this snail were incorrect as there was one ingredient missing
to really get them to loosen up from our waders and boots and drop in
the rinse bucket. In 5 gallon buckets in our garages we keep 1 with a
4-gallons Formula 409 and another with rinse water, both in buckets with
a lid for storage and reuse as we return from any given river. Each day
could be an adventure. Good to be ready. With this new information we
agreed it was time to actually do our part to help our Fly Fishing Community
be ready at a moments notice to dip their gear and be ready for anything.
We discussed ideas of how to get the word out and how in the world we
keep it simple. Hozer mentioned the bucket idea and I was all for it.
So simple neither of us thought it was worth anything but then there was
that light. Red Green would be proud.
One Saturday I had to finish off a small job and when I was done I worked
up such an appetite I had to stop by my local Home Depot for their famous
Gourmet Hotdog and a soda. Nuttin' beats a Home Depot Dog on a Saturday.
Nothing against Lowe's dogs, I just happen to be at the Depot. Whilst
I was there I wandered around a few minutes leaving my trail of Onions
and Mustard drippings up the Isle. I ended in the Garden section where
I discovered 1-gallon jugs of "Commercial Solutions Formula 409."
The one we had been informed of no less. I also found white and Bronco
Orange 5-gallon bucket lids that many said were not available. Lids are
$1.98 and the bucket is $5.00. There was that light again $$
Personally I think one gallon each leaves a 1-1/2 - to 2-gallon
shortage on a good Boot dipping (to submerge mine anyway..) Both at once
too.. 3 -1/2 to 4 Gallons seems Ideal for a good boot dip depending on
your foot size. (Shaquille would have to use a Bathtub but he has 18 rooms
there in Florida). If nothing else, out of all this Hozer and I felt we
could get many people to have on hand this Simple Kit. And Thus, we could
all be wise in knowing that we have done our part to help. Making money
came to mind but I have no more storage to help sell this. So my wife
has informed me. After much research, here is our solution in simple terms
to attempt to help our Ecology and help Eliminate the spread of the New
Zealand Mud Snail. This simple solution you can keep in your garage ready
for everyday use.
The Scientific Experiment:
Hozer dropped me off one evening after a long day on the South Platte
and I was determined, in detail to spell out how easy this method is when
you return late from a day on the river. All components Must' be on hand
before you return as this will not go as smooth otherwise.
The Kit Includes: 2- 5 gallon Buckets, ($4.99 ea.), 5-gal. Lids ($1.98
ea.), 2 to 4 gal Commercial Solutions 409 disinfectant ($8.97 each): but
4 gallons total is ideal. (D.O.W. recommendations) Pre-made before hand.
1 - 6 towels, Dry. Left over Beer in the Fridge or a half empty bottle
of Cutty Sark.
Just having this all ready will give you the Sense of feeling good about
helping to stop the spread of this critter, That my Fishing Friends, Is
Priceless!
People must also be aware that they should not leave their
waders in the rinse water as waders seep after a certain amount of soaking.
Mfg.. have specs on this. I have done my research as you see.
The Recipe: In 5 gallon bucket, fill 4 gallons "Commercial Solutions
Formula 409 Cleaner Degreaser Disinfectant."
Directions for use: Soak Waders and boots 10 minutes each.
The Simple Solution: Upon return from river, have a beer.
Place boots in bucket, have another beer (Cutty works too). In 10 minutes,
return and place boots in clean rinse water and place waders in solution.
Sit and have another beer. Call Hozer and tell him how much you think
he's such a Great Fisherman while he's saying the same to you. Teamwork!
Hear wives in background moaning, Geeze-Not Again! Stumble back and lay
(drop) boots out to dry and attempt to place waders in rinse water. Both
legs if possible cause your running out of beer. Wipe arm with towel and
drain water from beer can. Get fresh beer as last one didn't count. Be
seated and let stand while having the two last beers. Time is of no interest
anymore. Crawl back to waders and remove from rinse water, toss waders
on chair for later hanging after you can see straight enough to stand.
But here you must Try'to put lid on bucket.
Use towel to dry your face after you managed to slide into the bucket
and spill entire contents on garage floor. Cuss the man that put this
silly idea into your head. Do not make eye contact with wife while crawling
into bed. Attempt again in morning when able to stand. Floor should be
dry by then. Repeat after every trip.
There, I've done my part to help stop the Spread of the
New Zealand Mud Snail. I didn't realize what an effort I was putting into
this. It actually hurt all the next day.
Hozer called, asked if I'd heard of the " Netherland
Riffle Flea !!"" Oh Noo!!!
